2026 ICF Coaching Futures Report

Envisioning Coaching's Next Horizon

This report does not predict a single future. Instead, it explores multiple scenarios shaping access to coaching worldwide. Grounded in global insights, foresight methods, and creative storytelling, we invite you to imagine what coaching could become and how today’s actions influence what comes next.

The future is not fixed. Help shape it.

I have a feeling that

applied neuroscience & tech will create exciting new futures for Coaching. Eg. Brain-computer interfaces (like Neuralink or its successors) will allow real-time emotional & cognitive state tracking. Coaches may tap directly into clients’ neurological patterns -tracking stress, clarity, resistance – and guide transformation via neural synchronization.
What do we need to consider as we step into this future?
What ethical safeguards must evolve?
What are the boundaries of predictive coaching?

I wonder if

lawsuits across the United States against Life Coaches like that one in Utah could push the industry toward regulation. It feels like coaches working in areas close to healthcare (like ADHD or wellness coaching) might end up needing licenses, like therapists

I am noticing that

there is an intake for AI based coaching, however, the need for genuine/authentic empathy will only create more demand for human based coaching.

I am curious about

The use of biometrics and neuroscience tools. While AI gets the spotlight often – there’s also some interesting companies investing in the science of our holistic health and how it’s tied to our thoughts and belief systems. If we are coaching the person and not the problem – then these tools and assessments can help us as coaches more quickly identify or explore the root causes of why the client may be stuck or how to expedite the success they’re seeking in their challenges and opportunities.

I am noticing that

competencies, while helpful to start with, become less relevant as we gather experience. Relational skills and collective work begin to matter more. Being able to bring the proper focus, mindset, and attention to match the coachee’s needs at any given moment is essential. Learning is less effective in silos and more transformational in collaboration with peers.
